Cisco 3850 Reload Slot Command

  • Solved: Hi Experts, I would like to know if, lets say, we have 5 or 6 switches in a stack, but I want to reload all the devices at once, which command should I use? I have seen the reload slot i d command, but the slot is referencing the switch.
  • Password recovery on the newer Cat3k boxes (3850/3650) is slightly different then how it used to be on pretty much all of the other catalyst pizza box switches. Here is a short instruction set from the Cisco support forums.

You can use the reload at command to schedule a reboot of the whole stack but there is no way that I'm aware of to reload an individual stack member at a specific time, without resorting to third-party tools to issue the reload slot command at a specific time. Edit 1: To set your stack member priorities, you can use the command switch priority. You can display the current stack member number by using the show switch user EXEC command. Step 2: reload slot stack-member-number Example: Switch # reload slot 5 Resets the stack member. Step 3: copy running-config startup-config Example: Switch # copy running-config startup-config Saves your entries in the configuration file.

NOTE: Mr. Bray recommends disabling the ability to recover the password/config with one of these commands (varies):
no service password-recovery or
system disable password recovery switch all

Apply power to the switch. Immediately press the Mode button while the System LED is flashing. Hold the Mode button until all the system LEDs turn on and remain solid; then release it.

Command
  1. Initialize flash
    Switch: flash_init
  2. Ignore the startup configuration
    Switch: SWITCH_IGNORE_STARTUP_CFG=1
  3. Boot packages.conf
    Switch: boot flash:packages.conf
  4. Terminate the initial configuration dialog by answering No.
    Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]: No
  5. At the switch prompt, enter privileged EXEC mode.
    Switch> enable
    Switch#
  6. Copy the startup configuration to running configuration.
    Switch# copy startup-config running-config
    Destination filename [running-config]?
    Press Return in response to the confirmation prompts. The configuration file is now reloaded, and you can change the password.
  7. Enter global configuration mode and change the enable password.
    Switch# configure terminal
    Switch(config)#
  8. Write the running configuration to the startup configuration file.
    Switch# copy running-config startup-config
  9. Confirm that manual boot mode is enabled.
    Switch# show boot
    BOOT variable = flash:packages.conf;
    Manual Boot = yes
    Enable Break = yes
  10. Reload the switch.
    Switch# reload
  11. Return the Bootloader parameters (previously changed in Steps 2 and 3) to their original values.
    Switch: SWITCH_DISABLE_PASSWORD_RECOVERY=1
    Switch: switch: SWITCH_IGNORE_STARTUP_CFG=0
  12. Boot the switch with the packages.conf file from flash.
    Switch: boot flash:packages.conf
  13. After the switch boots up, disable manual boot on the switch.
    Switch(config)# no boot manual

You will need

  • One Cisco Catalyst 3850 switch or switch stack which you have forgotton or do not know the password for.
  • A laptop with a console cable
  • An assistant to help (if the switch is in a rack)

Password Recovery Cisco Catalyst 3850 – Step 1

Connect your console cable to the 3850 and ensure you can get a command prompt.

The first step is to power your switch off, if you are running a 3850 stack ensure to remove all power cables and if using stack power disconnect the stack power so you can isolate the top switch of the stack.

You need to be able to power on one switch and hold down the mode button at the same time, if the switch is in a rack you might need someone to help you with this bit!

Step 2

Now you have powered off your switch / switches and located the Mode Button and got a helper (if needed) to assist with the power you are set.

Hold the Mode Button down and connect the power – after about 12 seconds the SYST LED will go Amber along with all the other four LEDS. Release the Mode Button

If this step has gone well, you should be looking at the following on your laptop

You now need to enter the two following command

Next reboot the switch with the following command

Answer No to this and you should be looking at a blank switch config

Step 3

You now need to copy your startup-config to the running-config so that you keep the configuration on the switch.

Use the command

copy startup-config running-config

You should now see the hostname of your switch and all the configuration should be there.

Now you either need to add another username

or change the enable secret

Or disable AAA

Once you have performed those steps you just need to tell the 3850 to check it’s startup config on the next boot again, you do this with the command you used earlier to ignore it.
